Social Media Introduction

Social Media can be confusing. How do you decide which platforms to use?
This presentation provides an overview of the 6 Social Media platforms that BAAPT uses,
with general information about the features each platform provides.

This is part 1 of a two-part presentation by:

    Vicki Brown, vlb@cfcl.com
    Social Media Wizard
Bay Area Association for Psychological Type (BAAPT; baapt.org)

For a information on joining and setting up each platform, see Part 2: SocialMediaUse.

Click the Show Presentation button below to view the slideshow.
Clickable links are configured to open in a new tab (or window) to prevent confusion within the slide presentation.

Slide 3: What Is Social Media Anyway?

social-media-mag_glass.jpg Wikipedia calls Social Media the social interaction among people in which they create, share, or exchange information and ideas in virtual communities and networks.

An article from 2008 defines Social Media this way:

In Social Media, there is Media, which means that social media are digital places for publication.

In Social Media there is Social, which implies sharing (files, tastes, opinions) but also social interactions (individuals gathering into groups, individual acquiring notoriety and influence).

There are dozens hundreds of social media sites and plenty of articles to read that will tell you more than you ever need to know.

Slide 46: Google Hangouts

The BAAPT Marketing team uses a Google Hangout for our monthly "touch base" meeting.

Slide 47: Google Groups (mailing lists)

Also for shared interests, Google provides the ability to create and join mailing lists.

A mailing list is a collection of names and addresses used by an individual or an organization to send material to multiple recipients. The term is often extended to include the people subscribed to such a list, so the group of subscribers is referred to as "the mailing list", or simply "the list".

You'll need a Google gmail account to subscribe yourself to a list; however, you don't need a gmail account to join. If you don't have a gmail account, contact the list owner.

Slide 48: SFBAAPT Type-Talk List

If you wanted to contact Bay Area Type enthusiasts (current and former BAAPT members) by email, how would you do it?

We're putting together a mailing list to make that easier.

Join the list.

Note: If you don't have a gmail account, send email to Vicki and ask to be added to the mailing list.

Slide 61: LinkedIn Features - Recommendations

A recommendation is a comment written by a LinkedIn member to recognize or commend a colleague, business partner, or student. Viewers of your profile often view the recommendations you've received on your profile to see what others have to say about your work.

The best recommendations come from people who value your work, services or products, such as managers, colleagues, co-workers, customers, and clients. Hiring managers and people searching for new customers and business partners prefer to work with people who come recommended by someone they know and trust. There's no limit to the number of recommendations you can request or give.
